ADOPTEE ART: BLUE AND LETTERS FOR THE OCEAN
BY STEPHANIE-DESIREE MARU FLOOD
Blue and Letters for the Ocean are visual journal spreads that were meditatively crafted on the island of Oahu circa 2021, during a pandemic and in the starting phases of legally changing my first name to my birth name.
These pages are from a junk journal that was repurposed from a discarded photo album, its pages digitized and edited to look aged, weathered, and rustic from time’s humbling spells.
The mixed media originates from old-fashioned snail-mail exchanges sent by dear penpals from all over the world. Other ephemera come from local thrift stores and offbeat places.

Stephanie-Desiree Maru Flood is a Filipino-American adoptee born in destitute poverty in the Philippines circa 1985, adopted in 1987 into the United States. She is a blogger at Intercountry Adoptee Voices, mixed media crafter, creative writer, author and educator currently living in Hawaii.
