Gotcha Day,
A Cautionary Tale

BY ROBERTA HOLLAND

Once upon a time, in a land not far enough away, excited mommies and daddies waited anxiously, giant butterfly nets in hand. Their eyes looked upward to the heavens, where big babies, tiny babies, pink babies, green babies parachuted from the sky.

The babies floated down, down, close to the ground. The mommies and daddies swung their nets with all their might. Thwack!!

“GOTCHA!” they yelled in triumph. Some of the mommies and daddies caught more than one!

Big babies, tiny babies yelped in surprise. Some pink babies, some green babies started to cry.

Stuck in their nets, the babies entered new homes. They learned their shapes and colors, new smells, and new sounds.

They tried to fit in. They tried to calm down.

Every year after that day, the mommies and daddies threw a big party.

“Today is a Very Special Day,” they said. “One year ago today… five years ago today… ten years ago today…WE GOTCHA!”

“Got me from where?” the pink baby asked.

“It doesn’t matter,” the mommy said. “We gotcha!”

“Got me from who?” the green baby asked.

“It doesn’t matter,” the daddy said. “We gotcha!”

“Did it hurt?” the tiny baby asked.

“Not at all!” the mommies and daddies laughed.

“I think it hurt,” the big baby said.

“Don’t be silly,” the mommies and daddies scolded. “Today is a happy day! The day we caught you. The day we saved you.

“The day we GOTCHA!”
